The Indian government, led by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, launched the Khelo India Mission in the 2026-27 Union Budget to transform the nation’s sports ecosystem over the next decade.
The initiative expands on the 2017 Khelo India programme by establishing a tiered talent development system, boosting sports infrastructure, and investing in coaches, sports science, and technology.
Funding for the programme increases to Rs 1,000 crore, with additional support for sports goods manufacturing through a Rs 10,000 crore SME growth fund.
