The Indian government has allocated Rs 6,000 crore for the 2027 Census, a sixfold increase from the previous year, marking the first fully digital decadal census since 2021.
The 16th Census, delayed by the pandemic, will begin with a houselisting phase on April 1, 2026, and include caste enumeration for the first time.
It will involve 30 lakh enumerators using digital tools, with a self-enumeration option, and run in two phases, ending with population enumeration in February 2027.
The total outlay for the Census, including related schemes, is Rs 11,718 crore.
