Assam's governor promoted tribal development through cultural and environmental values, while the chief minister warned of an Assamese identity crisis due to demographic changes.
On January 31, 2026, Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya urged integrating cultural values, spiritual growth, and environmental stewardship with material progress for tribal development during the Janajati Sammelan and Vivekananda Kendra Institute of Culture’s 30th anniversary in Guwahati.
He praised tribal communities as guardians of sustainable traditions and called for development that strengthens identity, language, and self-respect.
The Governor highlighted the institute’s work in education, healthcare, and rural development across the Northeast, including partnerships with over 60 schools, and called on tribal youth to embrace service and national dedication.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma warned of an identity crisis for the Assamese community, citing demographic shifts and land encroachment in historically Assamese regions, and emphasized the need for community-led efforts to preserve cultural heritage.
