U.S. sanctions hit two UK crypto exchanges for aiding Iran’s IRGC, freezing assets and banning U.S. dealings.
The U.S. Treasury’s OFAC imposed sanctions on two UK-registered crypto exchanges, Zedcex and Zedxion, on January 30, 2026, marking the first time U.S. sanctions have targeted entire digital exchanges for facilitating transactions tied to Iran and its Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
The move follows evidence that Zedcex processed over $94 billion in transactions since 2022, with seven Tron wallet addresses linked to IRGC infrastructure using layering techniques to obscure funds.
Zedxion’s ties to Iranian businessman Babak Morteza Zanjani, previously sanctioned for sanctions evasion, were also cited.
The action freezes all U.S.-connected assets and bans U.S. entities from engaging with the platforms, signaling a broader enforcement push against state-backed actors using blockchain technology to bypass financial restrictions.
