Retired U.S. Army Colonel Douglas MacGregor stated on January 31, 2026, that India will not always align with U.S. positions, emphasizing that nations act in their own interests.
He criticized the U.S. 50% tariff on Indian goods—imposed over India’s oil trade with Russia—as outdated and counterproductive, rejecting a "you're either with us or against us" approach.
MacGregor urged the U.S. to focus on shared interests in trade, security, and commerce.
Despite a 31.4% year-on-year drop in Indian textile exports to the U.S. in November 2025, India has diversified crude oil imports, increasing purchases from the U.S., Libya, Egypt, Brazil, and Brunei while reducing reliance on Russia, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Venezuela, according to the Economic Survey 2026.
India is also pursuing trade agreements with the U.S. and others, following a major FTA with the EU.
