Ontario man linked to white supremacist groups seeks lighter sentence for terrorism charges, citing trauma and remorse.
Matthew Althorpe, an Ontario man who led a white supremacist network and promoted extremist content through the Atomwaffen Division and Telegram’s Terrorgram from 2018 to 2021, is seeking a lighter sentence after pleading guilty to terrorism charges.
His defense argues he showed remorse, has no history of physical attacks, and was influenced by untreated childhood trauma and mental health issues.
Prosecutors counter that his online propaganda inspired real-world attacks, including a 2022 deadly assault in Slovakia and a 2024 mosque stabbing in Turkey.
Originally charged with eight counts, he pleaded guilty to three.
Sentencing is set for March 27, 2026.
