A Montana man arrested for re-entering illegally after deportation faces charges, sparking debate over rural immigration enforcement.
Roberto Orozco-Ramirez, a 42-year-old diesel mechanic and longtime Froid, Montana resident, was arrested by Border Patrol on January 26 on federal charges of illegal re-entry and threatening an officer after allegedly refusing entry and throwing a wooden board at agents.
Though Border Patrol claimed a month-long investigation and linked him to the Sureños gang, no gang-related records were found.
Orozco-Ramirez, previously deported in 2009, has no criminal history, and local officials reported no prior issues.
His arrest, which drew community protests and national attention, has sparked debate over immigration enforcement in rural areas.
He remains detained and is set to appear in court on February 5.
