Iraqi calligrapher Ali Zaman finishes a 302-scroll, handcrafted Quran in Istanbul, now the world’s largest handwritten version.
Iraqi calligrapher Ali Zaman has completed a massive handwritten Quran after six years of work in Istanbul, creating 302 double-sided scrolls measuring 4 meters by 1.5 meters each.
Made from custom parchment using traditional materials like eggs, corn starch, and alum, the manuscript was crafted by hand at the Mihrimah Sultan Mosque, where Zaman moved from Iraq in 2017.
He describes Islamic calligraphy as a spiritual practice, dedicating himself from dawn to dusk.
Though not yet recognized by Guinness World Records—currently holding the title for the largest printed Quran—the work is widely regarded as the world’s largest handwritten version.
Now stored at the mosque, Zaman hopes it will be displayed publicly in a museum or cultural institution.
