Indian locksmiths demand lower GST on locks and a digital tax system ahead of Feb. 1 budget.
Aligarh locksmiths and small business leaders are urging the Indian government to adopt a fully digital, faceless GST system and cut the GST rate on locks from 18% to 3–5% in the upcoming Union Budget, arguing that locks are essential for household security and not luxuries.
They say high taxes hurt small artisans and cottage industries, and a digital system would reduce corruption and harassment.
The budget, to be presented on February 1, marks Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s ninth consecutive delivery.
