On January 30, 2026, Indian Railways expanded its indigenous Kavach Version 4.0 automatic train protection system to 472.3 route kilometres across three key sections—Vadodara–Virar, Tuglakabad–Palwal, and Manpur–Sarmatanr—marking the largest single-day and monthly rollout to date.
This brings total Kavach coverage to 1,306.3 route kilometres across five zones, enhancing safety on high-density corridors like the Delhi–Mumbai and Delhi–Howrah routes.
The system, which uses GPS and radio communication to prevent collisions and signal violations, automatically applies brakes and supports emergency alerts.
The first Kavach-equipped train, the Sasaram Intercity Express, successfully completed a head-on collision test.
Over 360 locomotives are now fitted, with ongoing work to extend coverage to 4,235 route kilometres, including upgrades to 160 kmph speeds.
