India has sent 10 Bailey bridges to Sri Lanka aboard INS Gharial, arriving in Colombo on January 31, 2026, to support recovery from Cyclone Ditwah.
The shipment is part of a $450 million Special Economic Package announced during External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s visit.
The bridges, including two recently inaugurated on the Kandy–Ragala Road, aim to restore critical transportation links in landslide-affected, hard-to-reach areas.
Implemented with Sri Lankan military and road authorities, the effort is part of India’s ongoing HADR mission, Operation Sagar Bandhu, reinforcing regional cooperation and infrastructure recovery.
Further bridges are expected to ensure full connectivity restoration.
