India has added two new wetlands—Patna Bird Sanctuary in Uttar Pradesh and Chhari-Dhand in Gujarat—to its Ramsar List, bringing the total to 98.
The designation, announced ahead of World Wetlands Day 2026, recognizes their ecological importance for migratory and resident birds, as well as wildlife including chinkara, wolves, and endangered species.
The expansion marks a 276% increase since 2014, reflecting India’s growing commitment to wetland conservation under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.
