A hiker fell on Great Gable, was rescued after 5.5 hours, and airlifted to hospital with head and arm injuries.
A walker with multiple injuries, including head and arm trauma, was airlifted to a specialist hospital on January 29, 2026, after falling on Great Gable in the Lake District. Cumbria Police were alerted at 1:58 p.m. by two hikers who found the injured person near Beck Head. A large rescue effort involving the Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency’s Rescue 936 helicopter followed, but poor weather prevented a winch landing. A ground team stabilized the patient with medical supplies and carried them uphill on a stretcher to Beck Head, where they were airlifted to hospital. The operation lasted over five and a half hours in cold but dry conditions. The rescue team expressed gratitude to the helicopter crew and wished the patient a full recovery.
