The Diocese of Green Bay launched the sainthood process for Adele Brice, a 19th-century immigrant known for faith, charity, and alleged visions.
The Diocese of Green Bay has begun the formal process to explore sainthood for Adele Brice, a Belgian immigrant who moved to Northeast Wisconsin in 1855.
On January 30, 2026, church officials declared her a “Servant of God,” the first step in canonization.
Brice, who was partially blind and illiterate, claimed to have seen the Virgin Mary in 1859 and spent her life preaching, building a school and chapel, and helping communities, including during the 1871 Peshtigo Fire.
The diocese will now investigate her life for heroic virtue and seek evidence of miracles attributed to her intercession.
If approved, she would become the first saint from Northeast Wisconsin.
