Detroit Zoo exchanges polar bear Kali for Nuka to boost population health and social dynamics.
The Detroit Zoo has welcomed 13-year-old polar bear Kali from the Toledo Zoo in a coordinated exchange aimed at improving polar bear population health and social dynamics.
Kali, orphaned in Alaska in 2013 and previously housed in Saint Louis and Toledo, now shares the Arctic Ring of Life habitat with two female bears, Suka and Haley, in a gradual introduction process.
In return, Detroit’s Nuka moved to Toledo to reunite with female bear Crystal.
The transfer follows recommendations from the Polar Bear Population Alliance and reflects a shared commitment to conservation and animal well-being.
