Colorado City, Arizona, and Hildale, Utah—once governed by Warren Jeffs’ polygamous sect—have transformed from isolated, theocratic communities into typical American towns with soccer leagues, bars, wineries, and public events. After federal court supervision began in 2017 following Jeffs’ 2011 conviction for sex crimes and underage marriages, restrictions on youth sports, education, and social life were lifted. The towns were released from oversight nearly two years early in 2025, marking a shift toward self-governance, private property, and civic participation. While the legacy of the sect remains, residents now enjoy greater freedoms and integration with mainstream society.
