Beth de Araújo’s debut film “Josephine,” a powerful drama about an 8-year-old girl who witnesses a sexual assault and is based on the director’s childhood, won both the U.S. dramatic grand jury prize and audience award at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival.
Starring Channing Tatum and Gemma Chan as the girl’s parents and featuring a standout performance by newcomer Mason Reeves, the film received critical acclaim for its sensitive storytelling.
De Araújo accepted the awards with an emotional speech addressing rape culture and survivor silence.
Other winners included “Nuisance Bear” for U.S. documentary grand jury prize and “To Hold a Mountain” for international documentary award.
The festival also honored “Shame and Money,” “The Incomer,” and several documentaries with audience and specialty prizes.
