Assam CM unveiled a statue of Ahom founder Sukaphaa in Guwahati on Jan. 31, 2026, honoring his 1228 AD arrival and legacy.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma unveiled a statue of Swargadeo Chaolung Sukaphaa, founder of the Ahom dynasty, in Guwahati’s Natboma on January 31, 2026, during the Me-Dam-Me-Phi festival.
Funded from the CM’s discretionary fund and developed with support from Union Minister Pabitra Margherita and the Tai Ahom Cultural Society, the statue honors Sukaphaa’s 1228 AD arrival in Assam, his peaceful integration with local communities, and his role in shaping the region’s cultural unity.
The site, now enhanced to better showcase Ahom heritage, will receive an additional Rs 2 crore for further development.
The event was attended by senior political figures and celebrated Assam’s historical legacy.
