Alabama bans marijuana use in cars with minors, mandates reporting by staff, and heads to Senate.
Alabama's House has passed HB 72, banning marijuana smoking or vaping in vehicles when a person under 19 is present, classifying violations as a Class A misdemeanor with up to one year in jail.
The bill also requires teachers and certain others to report children who smell of marijuana to child protective services.
It passed with mostly Republican support and limited Democratic backing, amid concerns over racial profiling and enforcement.
The bill now moves to the Senate and could take effect October 1 if signed by Governor Kay Ivey.
