U.S. probes Meta claims of accessing WhatsApp messages despite encryption promises.
A U.S. government investigation, "Operation Sourced Encryption," is examining allegations by former Meta contractors who claim they and Meta staff had unrestricted access to WhatsApp messages, contradicting the app’s end-to-end encryption promises.
The probe, led by the Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security, began in 2024 and remains active, though officials say the claims are unsubstantiated and outside one agent’s authority.
Meta denies the allegations, maintaining that no one, including the company, can access encrypted message content.
The investigation stems from a whistleblower complaint and interviews conducted in 2025, reigniting concerns over Meta’s privacy practices, including a prior $5 billion fine.
No charges have been filed.
