Nigeria enforces new tax laws Jan. 1, 2026, to boost fairness and collection amid resistance.
Nigeria’s new tax laws, effective January 1, 2026, are being enforced despite resistance from those who long avoided taxes, according to Chairman Taiwo Oyedele.
He emphasized the government’s commitment to fairness, noting Nigeria’s personal income tax collection remains below N3 trillion despite a population four times larger than South Africa’s, which collected over N60 trillion in personal income tax in 2024.
Oyedele criticized the current system’s inefficiency and stated the reforms aim to ensure no one is above the law.
