A new $162 million forensic mental health unit opened in Auckland, replacing old facilities to cut wait times and improve care.
A new 60-bed forensic mental health unit opened at Auckland’s Mason Clinic on January 30, 2026, replacing outdated facilities with a $162 million, three-storey building named E Tū Wairua Hinengaro.
The facility, serving the Northern Region’s nearly two million residents, features improved ventilation, secure courtyards, and 10,000 square metres of space to enhance patient recovery and staff conditions.
It aims to reduce the average 50-day wait for a bed, decreasing prolonged prison stays.
First patients are expected by late February, with recruitment for 57 new staff underway.
