Melbourne’s Metro Tunnel launches new 10-minute peak trains, cutting wait times in half.
Melbourne’s Metro Tunnel has launched a major new public transport timetable, introducing more frequent “turn up and go” services with trains arriving every 10 minutes on key routes during peak times, cutting maximum wait times from 40 to 20 minutes.
The update, developed over three and a half years using data models and real-world feedback, marks the most significant rail network transformation in decades.
While initial changes took effect February 1, lines including Belgrave, Lilydale, Alamein, Glen Waverley, Hurstbridge, and Mernda saw no immediate updates, with additional services planned later in 2026, especially on the Upfield and Craigieburn lines.
The system is designed for long-term growth, supporting future capacity increases.
