Florida’s immigration detention center saw two pepper-spray incidents in 2025, amid legal challenges over conditions and authority.
Detainees at Florida’s “Deportation Depot” immigration center were pepper-sprayed on at least two occasions since opening in September 2025, including a December 24 incident after a detainee struck an officer and a prior October 29 event involving barricaded detainees and property damage.
No injuries were reported.
The facility is one of two state-run immigration detention centers in Florida, with plans for two more.
Governor Ron DeSantis said the state made 20,000 arrests of undocumented immigrants over the past year, 63% with prior criminal records, as part of a state-federal enforcement effort.
Legal challenges continue over conditions and authority at the state’s detention facilities, including claims of unsafe living conditions and restricted legal access, with multiple federal lawsuits pending.
