China's Zhongshan Station in Antarctica now tracks space debris and detected interstellar object 3I/ATLAS with new optical telescopes.
China’s Zhongshan Station in Antarctica now hosts a network of optical telescopes that track space debris with high precision and have detected interstellar object 3I/ATLAS, marking a milestone in China’s deep-space observation.
The system, including four 150-mm and one 310-mm telescope, achieves under-50-meter accuracy in tracking low-Earth-orbit debris and detects targets up to 10 times daily.
It supports collision warnings and aligns with China’s 2025–2027 space safety plan.
The station also advanced submillimeter astronomy by studying carbon cycles in space influenced by massive stars.
Future plans include expanding capabilities at Kunlun Station with optical and infrared telescopes.
