China tests world’s first megawatt-class airborne wind energy system, generating 385 kWh at 2,000 meters.
China has successfully tested the world’s first megawatt-class airborne wind energy system, the S2000 SAWES, which flew at 2,000 meters and generated 385 kilowatt-hours of electricity while connected to the power grid.
The 60-meter-long airship-like device harnesses high-altitude winds and transmits power via a tether, offering a potential solution for urban renewable energy with less land use.
Developed by Beijing Linyi Yunchuan Energy Technology, the system also supports communications and monitoring.
While still in testing, the milestone marks progress toward scalable airborne wind power.
