The Canadian government has agreed to a $27-million settlement with survivors of the Île-à-la-Crosse Boarding School in Saskatchewan, offering up to $10,000 for stays under five years and up to $15,000 for longer periods.
The deal follows a 2022 lawsuit over the school’s operation and failure to uphold care duties.
Ottawa will contribute $10 million for healing and cultural programs.
The agreement awaits court approval and comes after Saskatchewan’s premier apologized and pledged $40 million.
