school trustee Erica McLean was confronted at gunpoint by RCMP officers on January 28, 2026, after police mistakenly believed her black 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan matched the description of a stolen 2025 Volkswagen Taos linked to a crime syndicate.
She was surrounded, ordered to raise her hands, handcuffed, and held for about 30 minutes while fearing for her life.
Police later confirmed the error, apologized, and offered victim services support.
The actual stolen vehicle was recovered in a separate high-speed chase, leading to five arrests.
McLean, who is Indigenous and a public official, remains traumatized, questioning the level of force used despite the vehicle’s similarity to the stolen one, and is advocating for greater transparency and accountability in police procedures.
