The Archbishop of York won’t face discipline over past handling of a priest convicted of historical abuse, despite acknowledging mistakes.
The Archbishop of York, Stephen Cottrell, will not face disciplinary action over his handling of priest David Tudor, who was banned for life in 2024 after admitting to historical sexual abuse of two teenage girls.
A Church tribunal found that while Cottrell’s decisions to renew Tudor’s contracts were regrettable and flawed, they were made in good faith and did not constitute misconduct, as he lacked the authority to suspend Tudor and inherited a complex situation.
Cottrell acknowledged his mistakes and expressed sorrow for the impact on victims, saying he would act differently today.
The ruling has drawn criticism from abuse survivors who say it undermines accountability, but the tribunal concluded no formal action was warranted.
