Apple buys Israeli AI firm Q.ai for $2B to boost on-device speech and audio tech.
Apple has paid about $2 billion for Q.ai, an Israeli AI startup that specializes in audio and silent speech recognition.
Aviad Maizels, who was previously responsible for Apple's 2013 PrimeSense acquisition, founded the company and developed technology to interpret whispered or mouthed words using facial micro-movements, improve audio in noisy environments, and monitor health metrics such as heart rate.
The acquisition, which adds approximately 100 employees to Apple, furthers the company's efforts to strengthen on-device AI, improve voice interaction in products such as AirPods and Vision Pro, and accelerate its AI roadmap in the face of increasing competition.
