Alberta’s funding shift forces Mayerthorpe to pay 22% of policing costs by 2026, rising to 30% by 2030.
The Town of Mayerthorpe is seeking answers from Alberta Public Safety Minister Mike Ellis after a provincial funding shift will require small towns to cover 22% of policing costs starting in 2026, rising to 30% in five years.
Mayerthorpe’s policing costs are projected to triple from $64,000 in 2025 to $205,106 by 2030, with no change in service levels.
The town’s chief administrative officer cited rising expenses due to RCMP agreements, inflation, and new positions, and expressed concern over the lack of input in the new funding formula.
The council approved a motion to request a meeting with Ellis for clarification.
