He voiced concern that the agreement, which removes tariffs on the majority of goods, might threaten Western unity, especially in light of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Bessent implied that the trade agreement goes against common geopolitical objectives by highlighting Europe's continuous imports of refined Russian oil products through India, despite US tariffs on Indian goods for such purchases. Currently awaiting ratification, the agreement aims to increase trade between the blocs.
