UK and US agree on Chagos transfer to Mauritius, with US retaining Diego Garcia base under 99-year lease.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer said President Donald Trump initially backed the UK’s plan to transfer the Chagos Islands to Mauritius after a U.S. intelligence review found no objections, as long as the U.S. could keep its Diego Garcia military base.
Starmer emphasized that top U.S. officials, including Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, publicly endorsed the deal as a security win.
Despite Trump’s recent criticism calling it “great stupidity,” Starmer maintained the U.S. had formally supported the agreement during its review.
The UK will lease Diego Garcia for at least 99 years and pay Mauritius, while the Chagos Bill faces delays in Parliament over a Conservative amendment citing geopolitical concerns and a 1966 treaty.
