The UAE has launched the Middle East’s first biometric payment system, using facial and palm recognition, in a pilot at the Dubai Land Department. Developed by the Central Bank of the UAE with Network International and PopID, the system allows card- and phone-free transactions through secure biometric verification. Currently in proof-of-concept, it supports the UAE’s digital economy goals and aligns with new regulations phasing out SMS-based authentication. The initiative aims to boost security, convenience, and financial inclusion, reflecting broader efforts to position the UAE as a global fintech leader.
