Timmins Fire Department replaces bunker gear with PFAS-free suits to reduce cancer risk, using $474K and surplus grant funds.
The Timmins Fire Department will fully replace its bunker gear with PFAS-free suits, becoming one of Canada’s first departments to do so, after council approved $474,000 for 100 new Starfield Lion sets.
The gear uses a non-fluorinated moisture barrier, Stedair Clear, eliminating cancer-linked chemicals.
The purchase completes a phased rollout begun in 2024, with the new gear expected in five to six months and certified for a 10-year lifespan.
The department also acquired 27 extra sets using surplus funds from a $102,614 Ontario grant.
This move supports broader efforts to reduce firefighter cancer risks, which claim 50 to 60 Canadian lives annually, half in Ontario.
