Tech leaders condemn ICE after second Minneapolis protest shooting, urging de-escalation and reform.
After a protester was shot and killed in Minneapolis, the second such incident in a month, tech leaders like Tim Cook of Apple and Sam Altman of OpenAI have criticized ICE. Altman emphasized the need to distinguish between deporting violent criminals and targeting non-criminals. They denounced more extensive enforcement actions as excessive and called for moderation and de-escalation. Cook described the incident as "heartbreaking" and said he spoke with President Trump about it. More than 60 CEOs from Minnesota and more than 450 tech workers have called on businesses to speak out, cancel contracts, and stop supporting ICE. Previously silent major corporations like UnitedHealth Group and 3M have now joined the call. Divergent opinions on law enforcement caused a rift at Khosla Ventures, OpenAI's investor. The backlash comes after the federal immigration crackdown known as "Operation Metro Surge," which was initiated in December.
