Scientists drill into Antarctica’s Thwaites Glacier to study melting risks and improve sea level forecasts.
Scientists from the UK and South Korea have begun drilling into the Thwaites Glacier in West Antarctica, known as the "Doomsday Glacier," to study its grounding line—the most vulnerable zone where warm ocean water melts the ice from below.
Using a hot water drill, researchers are installing instruments to collect real-time data on ocean temperatures, currents, and ice melt, aiming to improve sea level rise projections.
The expedition, part of the International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration, marks the first direct exploration of this critical, previously inaccessible region.
Findings will help refine climate models and inform global adaptation strategies, as the glacier’s collapse could raise global sea levels by 65 centimeters.
