Russia awaits U.S. response to extend New START before its February 5, 2026, expiration.
Russia says it is still waiting for a U.S. response to President Putin’s proposal to extend the New START Treaty for one year, as the pact expires on February 5, 2026.
The treaty, which caps deployed warheads at 1,550 and delivery systems at 700, remains the last remaining nuclear arms agreement between the two nations.
Despite Russia’s offer to maintain current limits, the U.S. has not formally responded, with President Trump dismissing the treaty’s importance and calling for a new agreement including China, which Moscow says is Beijing’s sovereign choice.
The lack of progress raises concerns about a growing legal and strategic gap in nuclear arms control.
