Rik Rekowski, who led the Mary H. Weir Public Library in Weirton for 44 years, retired after a career marked by digital transformation and community outreach, including free Wi-Fi, literacy programs, and expanded services.
A reception honored his legacy, with Mayor Dean Harris presenting a proclamation recognizing his leadership in modernizing the library and fostering regional collaboration.
Rekowski, who began in 1982 as a Bookmobile librarian, oversaw automation, adult education, children’s programs, and community events, earning state and national acclaim.
He remains a respected advocate for libraries as vital community hubs.
Meanwhile, LeRoy Harris, programming and technology librarian at New Ulm Public Library since 2020, will depart on February 3, 2026, to become director at Cortez Public Library in Colorado.
