New Zealand opens two new specialist schools in 2027–2028 to support children with complex needs, backed by $747M in funding.
New Zealand is building two new day specialist schools in Palmerston North and South Auckland, the first in nearly 50 years, to better serve children with high and complex needs.
Set to open in 2027 and 2028, they will expand the national total to 29 specialist schools, supported by a $746.9 million funding boost.
The schools, using standardized offsite construction, will feature accessible classrooms, therapy areas, and family facilities.
The government also funded 50 new specialist classrooms and upgraded four existing schools, aiming to improve access, inclusion, and early support for students with physical, learning, and behavioral challenges.
