New Zealand lawmakers passed a modern slavery bill requiring large companies to report on supply chain risks, with fines up to $200,000, ahead of the 2026 election.
New Zealand’s National and Labour parties have united to fast-track a modern slavery bill using a new parliamentary procedure, bypassing the usual ballot after ACT Party opposition.
The legislation, co-sponsored by MPs Greg Fleming and Camilla Belich, requires large businesses to report on modern slavery risks in their supply chains, establishes a public register, and imposes fines up to $200,000, with civil penalties of $600,000 and potential director liability.
It aims to strengthen victim support, expand the Human Rights Commission’s role, and create a future anti-slavery commissioner.
The bill, which aligns New Zealand with the UK and EU, is expected to pass before the November 2026 election.
