Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen drew criticism for using the term “libtards” during a tele-town hall, with advocates and lawmakers calling the language ableist and harmful.
His office clarified the remark targeted left-wing protesters in Handmaid’s Tale costumes, not people with disabilities, and highlighted his administration’s efforts to clear a developmental disabilities waitlist, expand services, and boost special education funding.
Despite this, critics including State Sen. Megan Hunt and Disability Rights Nebraska condemned the comment as disrespectful and damaging, while potential primary challenger Charles Herbster said Pillen should be held accountable.
Rep. Don Bacon did not comment publicly.
