Malaysian court awards businessman $125,000 in damages after ruling two creators defamed him with false corruption claims in a 2023 podcast.
The High Court in Kuala Lumpur awarded businessman Farhash Wafa Salvador RM550,000 in damages after ruling that political activist Badrul Hisham Shaharin, known as Chegubard, and content creator Nurpais Ismail defamed him through false claims made in a 2023 podcast.
The court found the allegations of corruption and misuse of power were serious, damaging, and made with malice.
Judicial Commissioner Arziah Apandi ruled that both defendants were liable, with Nurpais amplifying the content through sensational titles and refusing to remove it despite a legal notice.
The award includes general, aggravated, exemplary damages, and legal costs.
Neither defendant appeared in court.
