Kazakhstan seeks U.S. approval to buy Lukoil’s stakes in its energy projects before Feb. 28, 2026 deadline.
Kazakhstan has formally asked the U.S. permission to purchase Lukoil's energy projects, such as the Karachaganak and Tengiz oilfields and a portion of the Caspian Pipeline Consortium, using preemption rights.
The action comes after U.S. sanctions against Lukoil, which mandate that the business sell off its foreign holdings by February 28, 2026.
The U.S. is still reviewing the request.
Any transaction must be approved by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).
