Japan's child suicide count hit a record 532 in 2025, driven by school-related stress, despite overall suicide rates falling.
Child suicides in Japan reached a record 532 in 2025, the second year in a row exceeding 500, with school-related issues cited as the top factor, according to Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare.
The number rose slightly from 2024, with 352 senior high school students, 170 junior high students, and 10 elementary school pupils among the victims.
While overall suicide deaths in Japan dropped to a record low of 19,097—down 1,223 from 2024—youth suicide rates remain a growing concern, especially among students.
Final data is expected in March.
