Homicides in England and Wales fell to 499 in the year to September 2025, the lowest since 1983, a 7% drop from the previous year, driven by a 23% decline in knife-related killings and reduced overall knife crime.
Violent and gun crime also reached their lowest levels this century, with London recording its fewest homicides since 2014.
However, shoplifting rose 5% to 519,381 incidents, and bank and credit card fraud increased 19% to 2.6 million cases.
The Home Secretary credited recent policing reforms, including plans to add 13,000 neighbourhood officers and create a National Police Service, for the progress.
