Ghana's president urged bold reforms to unlock AfCFTA’s potential for African industrialization and trade growth.
At the 2026 Africa Trade Summit in Accra, President John Dramani Mahama declared the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) the continent’s most ambitious integration effort, stressing its role in driving industrialization, expanding market access, and boosting intra-African trade.
He called for bold economic reforms, including improved tax collection, domestic resource mobilization, and innovative financing like industrial bonds and diaspora investment to overcome barriers such as high interest rates and limited long-term capital.
Mahama emphasized the need to reduce trade barriers, enhance infrastructure, and strengthen regional cooperation to unlock AfCFTA’s potential, urging swift implementation to build competitive, integrated supply chains and achieve sustainable, inclusive growth.
