Florida lawmakers seek to pass the "YaYa Alert" bill to improve emergency alerts for schools after a 9-year-old's 2023 killing.
Florida lawmakers are pushing SB 814, the "YaYa Alert" bill, to create a statewide emergency notification system that would immediately alert schools and childcare centers within three miles of an active threat, such as an armed suspect or homicide, following the 2023 killing of 9-year-old T’yonna “YaYa” Major in Pine Hills.
Named in her honor, the bill aims to standardize inconsistent local alert systems and improve communication between law enforcement and schools to enhance student safety.
Though the measure passed unanimously in the Senate, it remains pending in the current legislative session.
