Two ships are laying undersea cables off Sydney to improve Australia’s internet, backed by a $550 million fund.
Two large ships, the SubCom Responder and Ile d’Yeu, are off Sydney’s coast laying undersea cables to boost Australia’s internet connectivity.
The SubCom Responder is installing Google’s Tabua cable to the U.S. via Fiji, while the Ile d’Yeu is deploying Subco’s SMAP cable from Sydney to Perth through Melbourne and Adelaide.
The Perth-to-Melbourne segment is set to launch in March, with the Sydney link expected by May.
These cables enhance resilience by avoiding vulnerable overland routes and support Australia’s strategic role in the Indo-Pacific.
The projects are backed by a $550 million boost to the Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific.
