Senators introduce bill to restore Forest Service funding for Tahoe land management and expand tribal land authority.
On January 27, 2026, U.S.
Senators Cortez Masto, Rosen, Padilla, and Schiff introduced the Santini-Burton Modernization Act to restore the U.S. Forest Service’s ability to use funds from the 1980 law for land management in the Lake Tahoe Basin, including protecting water clarity, reducing wildfire risk, and managing recreation.
The bill also expands the Washoe Tribe’s authority to manage conserved lands.
It reverses a restriction that limited funds to land purchases only, ensuring ongoing stewardship of over 16,000 acres acquired since 1980.
The legislation has bipartisan support and companion legislation in the House.
